After the first year: long-term cards and citizenship
Each next document asks for a higher level of French and a civic exam. Prepare ahead.
What to do
- First multi-year card (usually 4 years): since 1 January 2026, French A2 and the civic exam, under 65. Cost 350 €, students 150 €. Students are exempt from A2 and the exam.
- Civic exam: 40 questions in French, 32 right answers to pass, 45 minutes at most, in an approved centre. The pass never expires. A TCF or TEF language result is valid 2 years.
- "Résident de longue durée-UE" card for 10 years: after 5 years of legal stay, income from the SMIC (1,867.02 € gross), B1 and the civic exam. Cost 350 €, or 250 € if your card is still valid.
- Naturalisation: usually after 5 years (2 years after a French higher-education diploma), B2, the civic exam, an interview. Apply online, 255 € stamp, answer within 18 months. Married to a French national: a declaration after 4 years of marriage.
- A child born in France: at 13 to 15 the parents can declare French nationality if the child has lived here 5 years since age 8; from 16 the child declares alone (5 years since age 11). At the tribunal judiciaire.
