Having a baby in France
From the first check-up to registration and benefits: what to do and when.
What to do
- First prenatal check-up before the end of the 3rd month; the doctor usually sends the declaration to the CPAM and CAF.
- Birth grant from the CAF: 1,093.11 € per child under an income ceiling; paid before the end of the 7th month.
- Register the birth at the mairie of the place of birth within 5 days of delivery. The livret de famille is given free with the first child.
- Then: your baby on your health cover (ameli, 3646), the CAF (basic allowance until age 3), your mutuelle, the tax office within 60 days.
